Inspired by Kentucky's poet laureate, George Ella Lyon, we wrote our own versions of "where I'm from" poems. We are, after all, shaped by our families, communities, and so many who love us.
Where I'm From
By Karen
I am from a place where
one day I am here
the next I am there
I am from a kind of parents
who moved and moved
to find a perfect place for us
Where I'm From
By Migel
I'm a Tulsan born late in the summer
In the heated country
In the warm hands of my parents
And the cozy hugs of my siblings
Always cheering me up
Where I’m From
By Jazmin
I’m from a place that is calm.
From a place that has a lot of flowers, birds, and beauty
Where leaves are falling of trees in front of my house
Where my house is safe for me.
Where I can be myself
I come from people that taught me to be
Generous, kind, loving, and thankful.
I’m from a mom and dad that risk their life for me.
I’m from a mom and brother that push me to do my best in school.
Even though they didn’t finish college, I can.
Where I'm From
By Ronaldo
I’m from a place where people search for oil
I left this place to another place where all my sisters live
in this place $100 is like $1,000
I am from this place where they have 50 states
but I’m the only one who was born there, from my family.
I am from fairs to carnavals.
I am from the soft and warm hand of my mother.
Where I'm from
By Leobardo
I’m from the windy drafts and grassy plains and fixing cats in between
from garden rows of roses, squash, and carrots
I help where I am needed
I was born where people get their wounds treated
I was raised where people rest but pay to stay
I go to school between the market and park
I have friends that like to run, play and laugh
Where I'm From
By Fernando
I’m from the hard work,
from loud places where the neighbors don't care,
I’m from the place where I left my family
that came from the Spanish that won
the battle vs the Inca’s.
I’m from the fire that is in me that is always making strong,
and trying to help my family and others to be happy,
I’m from the family that cares for me and
help others that need it.
I’m from the church that always helps others and never forget
That God is with them and he will come
To save us because he loves us.
I’m from the family that always tries their best,
I’m from the light that brings friendship
And teamwork that help the family
And doing the hard as I can.
I’m from the father that takes me to the park
And always making me happy
And takes me from school,
I’m from the mother that tries her best
To cook my food and bring me to school.
